Where Do I Start?

The most important aspect of sandwiches is the choice of bread: from "Filone" to "Ciabatta", from "Michetta" to "Focaccia", with some derivations like "Piadina", "Bruschetta" (a slice of grilled bread) or sandwiches based on pizza dough also being very popular among Italian people.

The second key feature is the decision of main ingredients: a meat-based sandwich or a fish-based one ? Better to opt for a vegetarian or a sweet sandwich ? There is spoiled for choice! Italy offers a great variety of fish, cured meats, cheese, vegetables to be used in your recipe. Let's take a look at the most common.

One of them is obviously based on the classic hamburger local kinds of meat like "Chianina", made together with tomatoes, lettuce, ketchup and mayonnaise, sometimes accompanied with cheese.

They wouldn't be typical Italian sandwiches if not using traditional products, like "mozzarella di bufala" from Campania (often served with tomatoes), Carne Salada, Tyrol's "Speck" (usually served with local cheese and "radicchio" salad), San Daniele or Parma ham, or Bresaola with rocket and Parmigiano.

Among these sandwiches, are most common also the vegetarian (which contains eggplants, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes and zucchini, together with mozzarella cheese and lettuce) or fish-based ones, like tuna (served with cocktail sauce) and shrimps.

Other recipes are related to particular cities or regions of Italy like Milan (with its classic "milanese", based on Milanesa cutlet and served with lettuce and sauces), or like the North-East (with "Tramezzino", two slices of very soft white bread with various fillings) or Calabria (with its famous "'nduja" or sausages, chilli and onions).

Don't forget the sweet Italian sandwiches, based on the typical "Nutella" (chocolate cream) or fruit jams, usually served together with butter in order to empathize its flavor.
